SKIRTING MOHAIR FIBER

Take the harvested fiber and spread it out on a skirting table. You can construct this type of table from a large rectangle of welded wire secured to a wooden frame. The wire allows the short fibers and debris to drop from the fleece. Picking through the fiber is still necessary to remove short sections or second cuts, manure tags, felted sections, and vegetable matter. Taking the time to carefully skirt the fiber will make all the subsequent steps in fiber processing easier.

Remove short bits of fiber and second cuts. Remove as much vegetable matter as possible. Some small bits will drop out as the fiber is combed or carded. Remove any matted sections of fiber and fiber that has felted. Any manure should be removed, as well as areas badly stained from urine. Most small stained areas will wash out in the scouring step.
